Sony has announced a refresh of its iconic MDR-3 wired headphones, which originally debuted in 1979 alongside the very first Walkman portable tape player.
Retro Design and Modern Additions
The updated MDR-3R headphones closely resemble the original aesthetic, featuring a simple, lightweight design with wired connectivity and no wireless options. However, they include several modern updates, such as a USB-C connection instead of a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, a built-in microphone for phone calls, and an integrated volume knob.
Pricing and Special Editions
Two versions of the headphones are available for purchase immediately. The standard MDR-3R model comes with blue and orange earpads and is priced at $60. Additionally, a special version themed after the television show Stranger Things features a headband logo along with black and red earpads for $80.
The release coincides with a broader trend of retro technology revivals, joining other resurging products like simple digital typewriters, cassette players, instant cameras, and flip phones as consumer interest in vintage electronics grows.
