Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy Hospitalized After Stroke

Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy was hospitalized over the weekend after suffering a stroke, according to an announcement from his office.

Hospitalization and Medical Status

Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, released a statement on Sunday confirming the diagnosis and noting that the senator is expected to make a full recovery. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon while Murphy was attending his son’s hockey game.

“Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game,” Herwitt wrote. “He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment.”

Political Background and Recent Events

Murphy, 53, is a prominent Democratic lawmaker who has served as an active campaign surrogate and established himself as a leader in foreign policy and executive branch oversight, drawing consideration as a potential 2028 presidential contender. The senator recently concluded a multi-destination tour of the Middle East, following which he cautioned that President Trump would significantly escalate conflict with Iran after the midterm elections.

The 53-year-old lawmaker’s health event follows a series of medical absences among members of Congress. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky spent months away from the Senate during an extended hospital and rehabilitation stay, while Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey was absent from the Capitol for months undergoing treatment for depression. Additionally, three prominent Democratic lawmakers—Senator Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and then-Senate candidate John Fetterman—were all hospitalized for strokes in 2022.
