Meta has expanded its Instagram video editing application, Edits, by launching a dedicated desktop version for Mac users. The company stated that the new desktop interface aims to help creators manage larger and more complex projects that prove difficult to handle on mobile devices.
Desktop Features and Controls
The desktop edition of Edits mirrors the layout of the mobile application while utilizing larger screens to deliver detailed editing controls. Users can combine multiple video clips and audio tracks, apply visual effects, and incorporate music directly from the built-in audio library.
Meta outlined the new capabilities in a blog post, highlighting features such as a complete multi-track timeline, keyframes for smooth transitions, and detailed audio waveforms for precise cuts. The software also simplifies trimming, splitting, and cutting, while color wheels, curves, and log conversions provide professional color grading options. Additionally, the application accommodates custom fonts and dedicated keyboard shortcuts.
Publishing and Competition
Similar to the mobile edition, the desktop software allows users to export completed videos entirely without watermarks. Creators can also publish their finished content straight to Instagram directly through the platform.
Meta introduced Edits early last year as a competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut, which remains a primary tool for numerous TikTok creators. The platform has since experienced significant growth, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reporting during a recent earnings call that Edits has surpassed 50 million active users.
Meta stated that development is already underway for future desktop software updates, including cross-platform editing support that will allow users to switch seamlessly between desktop and mobile devices while working on the same project.
