WhatsApp is introducing a new Events feature designed to streamline planning and scheduling directly within the application. The update, which will be available to all users over the coming weeks, allows individuals to manage their social calendars through a dedicated section in the settings menu.
Event Management and Customization
The new hub provides users with a comprehensive view of their past and upcoming plans, as well as tools to manage RSVPs. Hosts can personalize their events by adding a header photo and setting up custom reminders for guests. This update builds upon existing planning capabilities, making the platform more versatile for diverse social groups.
A significant aspect of this rollout is the ability to invite individuals who do not have a WhatsApp account. These guests can view event details and confirm their attendance without needing to sign up for the service. To maintain privacy, the platform ensures that a host’s phone number remains hidden from guests they do not know. Additionally, those without an account cannot access the event address until they have officially RSVP’d.
Expanding Platform Accessibility
By opening these tools to non-users, WhatsApp appears to be positioning itself as a direct competitor to event-planning services like Partiful. This move aligns with the company’s recent efforts to bridge the gap between its user base and those outside the platform. Last month, the service introduced a feature allowing people without accounts to join video calls.
These updates follow other major changes implemented this year, most notably the introduction of usernames. This feature allows users to interact on the platform without the necessity of sharing their personal phone numbers, further emphasizing the company’s focus on privacy and broader connectivity.
