Las Vegas Raiders and Aces owner Mark Davis has voiced reservations regarding the rapid expansion of sports gambling, despite operating his teams in the heart of the American gambling industry. In an interview with CNBC Sports, Davis highlighted concerns that the rise of betting, particularly proposition wagers, could jeopardize the integrity of professional sports.
Concerns Over Game Integrity
Davis expressed specific disapproval of proposition bets, which involve wagers on individual events within a game rather than the final result. He emphasized that maintaining the fairness and credibility of competition must remain the primary objective for professional leagues, even as they benefit from lucrative gambling partnerships.
“I’m not a fan per se of gambling on sports, especially the one-on-ones, the proposition types of betting,” Davis told CNBC Sports. He added that protecting the sport is paramount, stating, “I think the key thing is the integrity of the game.”
Reflecting on the evolution of the NFL’s stance, Davis recalled his youth when the league maintained a strict anti-gambling policy. He noted that locker rooms previously featured prominent signs warning players that any involvement in gambling would result in suspension or expulsion from the league.
The Rise of Prediction Markets
The comments arrive as professional leagues navigate the emergence of prediction markets, which enable users to trade contracts based on the outcomes of sporting events. While the NFL has integrated sports betting into its business model, it has maintained a cautious stance toward prediction market operators, citing concerns over regulation and competitive fairness.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell previously told CNBC Sport that the league advocates for stronger oversight of these markets. Goodell noted that the NFL is prioritizing patience and regulatory clarity to ensure the integrity of the game remains the top priority. In October, the league submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court, asserting that prediction markets constitute gambling and should be subject to state regulation.
Balancing Revenue and Risk
Despite his personal stance, Davis acknowledged the financial reality of the industry. Both the Raiders and the Las Vegas Aces maintain partnerships with BetMGM, and Davis noted that MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle played a key role in his acquisition of the Aces. He admitted that while the revenue generated from gambling entities is significant, leagues must carefully weigh these financial gains against potential risks to the sport.
“The revenue that is coming from gambling and those types of entities is large so there has to be a balance between integrity and what the good things that it can bring to the league,” Davis explained. He concluded by emphasizing that his primary focus remains on the competition itself, stating, “I’m more worried about the game on the field.”
