The iPhone 18 Pro Max introduces significant camera and battery enhancements that offer new creative possibilities for mobile photographers. During a two-week trip to Japan, the device served as a primary camera for capturing everything from Tokyo’s urban streets to Kyoto’s historic shrines.
New Creative Camera Controls
The iPhone 18 Pro series now features built-in manual controls, allowing users to adjust focus, white balance, shutter speed, and aperture directly within the Camera app. The variable aperture is a standout addition, offering four stops of adjustment from f/1.48 to f/4. Apple designed the f/4 setting to produce a starburst effect when capturing bright light sources, a feature that previously resulted in light artifacts on older models.
Adjustable shutter speeds further expand creative options, enabling users to capture light trails or motion-blurred backgrounds. While mastering these settings requires practice, they allow for effects that were once limited to third-party software. These tools are complemented by new Photographic Styles, which provide film-like simulations and grain effects similar to those found on dedicated cameras like the Fujifilm X100 or Ricoh GR series.
Software and Usability Challenges
Despite the creative potential, the camera software has areas for improvement. The grain effect in Photographic Styles can appear overly aggressive in low-light conditions, and users currently lack the ability to adjust its intensity. Additionally, the placement of manual controls within the interface is not optimized for one-handed use, and the dedicated Camera Control button does not yet support these new manual settings.
The author also noted that the inability to assign different Photographic Styles to the front and back cameras simultaneously complicates switching between street photography and selfies. Furthermore, the Dynamic Island, while now capable of displaying three live activities at once, occasionally suffers from display issues where text is cut off in certain third-party apps.
Battery Performance and Design
The iPhone 18 Pro Max demonstrates a notable improvement in battery life, comfortably lasting through a full day of heavy usage involving navigation, music streaming, and photography. This represents a significant upgrade over the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which often required mid-day charging during similar travel conditions. The device also manages heat more effectively, particularly when used without a case.
However, the phone remains heavy at 248 grams, which can make it feel bulky when paired with a protective case. While the battery life and thermal management are practical upgrades for any user, the advanced camera features are specifically tailored for those interested in creative, manual photography. The device’s endurance proved essential for the author’s two-week journey, eliminating the need to carry a power bank.
