Nations gather annually to establish plans for safeguarding the planet, yet another crucial summit precedes the Conference of the Parties 31. Known as COP17, the 17th meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity evaluates international progress toward a global pledge to safeguard at least 30 percent of global land and oceans by the year 2030. With fewer than three years remaining to achieve this goal, global efforts currently appear to fall short.
