The family of Jesus de Miguel stated that the impact he made on countless individuals is something they will forever cherish as the footballer’s funeral took place on Thursday. The 30-year-old Tenerife forward passed away after sustaining a severe injury during a Spanish second division match earlier in the week.
Funeral and High-Profile Mourners
De Miguel’s funeral service was conducted in Navahermosa, Toledo, situated approximately 125km away from Madrid, which is his parents’ hometown. Team-mates from Tenerife served as pallbearers, carrying his casket ahead of the service held at San Miguel Arcangel church.
Prominent figures from the football world attended the ceremony, including current Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin, and former Real Madrid and Spain coach Jose Antonio Camacho.
Following the tragedy on Monday, where De Miguel collided with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, mourners gathered at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez in Tenerife to leave flowers and light candles beneath a black and white photograph of the player.
Family and Club Reactions
Manuel Hernandez, the player’s agent, shared a statement on behalf of the family expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support. “Thank you for loving him, for remembering him and for being with us,” the statement read, adding that the footballer leaves behind an irreplaceable void alongside cherished memories.
FC Andorra goalkeeper Owono released a statement describing the aftermath as the most challenging period of his life, expressing immense sorrow for the loss. Across European competitions this week, matches observed a minute’s silence in honor of De Miguel, who had transferred to Tenerife during the summer of 2025.
Call for Match Postponements
The Spanish footballers’ union, known as the AFE, formally requested on Thursday that all fixtures scheduled for the weekend be postponed as a mark of respect. Matches involving Tenerife and Andorra, along with several midweek cup games, had already been called off, though Spanish clubs participating in European tournaments played their fixtures.
According to the union, players unanimously agreed that the required psychological and humane environment to compete normally is currently absent.
