Stranger Things Prequel Series Coming to Netflix in 2028

Netflix is celebrating Stranger Things Day by greenlighting a live-action prequel series titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, which is scheduled to premiere on the platform in 2028. While official details remain limited, the streaming company confirmed that the story will unfold during the 1950s, preceding both the original television series and the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

Teaser and Creative Team

An introductory teaser reveals that the new project is set in Marion, Nevada, in the year 1955. The promotional clip displays an abandoned bicycle equipped with a radio, followed by a camera pan toward a restricted area warning sign and a menacing sky that bursts with a loud explosion.

Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer expressed their excitement in a statement, noting, “We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating.” They added that the project offers a fresh take on the universe with a distinct location, new heroes and villains, before joking about casting and telling fans to watch the skies.

Although the Duffer brothers have signed an overall deal with Paramount, they remain involved as executive producers on the prequel. Kate Trefry, a veteran writer for the main series and the author of The First Shadow script, serves as the co-creator, showrunner, and writer. Meanwhile, filmmaker Joe Wright, recognized for directing movies like Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, is attached to direct the opening three episodes.

Broader Franchise Updates

In other franchise news, the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow is set to conclude its runs in London’s West End on December 27 and on Broadway on January 3, with a recorded version reportedly heading to Netflix. Additionally, the second season of the animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 debuted on the platform in September, alongside the release of a blooper reel from the concluding season of the flagship series.
