Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle acknowledged the heavy frustration of supporters following a 1-0 defeat by Everton at St James’ Park, which marked a second loss to the same opponent within a week. Boos echoed around the stadium at the final whistle after another error-strewn display that left the team struggling in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Mounting Pressure and Defensive Woes
The decisive moment arrived when goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek allowed a routine shot to squirm under his body, enabling Thierno Barry to tap home the winner. Although Jaissle felt the goal should have been disallowed for a foul on Fabian Schar in the build-up, he admitted his side failed to show the necessary bravery on the pitch. The loss was Newcastle’s fourth in six league games and their seventh home defeat of 2026, the most of any Premier League side this year. The Magpies have now lost 16 of their past 18 league games when conceding first and have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their past 14 home league matches, setting an unwanted club record.
Speaking to the media after the match, Jaissle described the situation as a big disappointment and accepted full responsibility for the team’s poor run. He noted that the squad is caught in a negative spiral with low confidence across both young and experienced players, emphasizing that unity is the only way forward. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher stated on Sky Sports that he fears for Newcastle, describing the home atmosphere as flat and boring compared to the high-energy style expected from the Red Bull managerial model.
A Tough Period of Transition
The current struggles follow a major summer transition after Eddie Howe’s departure following five years in charge, alongside the arrivals of the 38-year-old German coach and several squad changes that saw key players like Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes depart. Newcastle currently sit in the lower half of the standings with 11 points from nine games. Captain Dan Burn acknowledged the growing nervousness in the stadium, noting that a lack of confidence and an anxious atmosphere make it difficult for the players to build momentum.
Statistically, Newcastle are facing severe problems at both ends of the pitch. They have managed only 12 goals in nine league games, scoring just once from their past 47 shots across all competitions, while facing the most shots of any Premier League team this season. Furthermore, substitute Jacob Ramsey received a red card late in the match, compounding the team’s difficulties as they prepare to face Fulham away before the November international break.
