Russia Detains Teen Over Alleged Moscow Attack Plot

Russian authorities have detained a teenager suspected of planning an attack at a popular Moscow park following a security warning issued by the United States, according to the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Investigation and Arrest

The FSB stated that the unidentified Russian citizen published pictures on TikTok showing the individual wearing a balaclava and tactical gear while holding a replica of an automatic weapon. The suspect additionally shared images taken at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve located in southern Moscow alongside the caption reading, “I found a place.”

Following the online posts, security agents searched the residence of the suspect and recovered the clothing items and accessories featured in the photographs. An examination of the teenager’s mobile phone revealed internet searches concerning terrorist attacks and mass killings, alongside a subscription to a neo-Nazi Telegram channel.

US Warning and Official Response

The arrest followed a security alert released on Saturday by the US embassy in Moscow, which cautioned about a credible threat of a mass casualty event targeting the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve palace and park complex. The embassy advised individuals to steer clear of the location and noted that Washington was coordinating its response with Russian officials. Consequently, authorities temporarily closed the park on Saturday.

The FSB expressed appreciation for the intelligence provided by the American government, stating that Russia’s Investigative Committee is currently evaluating the appropriate legal measures to pursue against the suspect.

Washington has previously shared intelligence with Moscow regarding potential security threats, notably in March 2024 prior to an assault by an ISIL affiliate on a Moscow concert hall that resulted in over 140 deaths. This recent cooperation occurred despite ongoing diplomatic strains between the US and Russia stemming from the conflict in Ukraine.
