Israeli authorities have released Palestinian journalist Abed Abou Shhadeh following a five-day detention without any formal charges. Abou Shhadeh stated after his release on Sunday that the detention constituted political measures aimed at intimidating Arab society.
Detention and Allegations
Abou Shhadeh was held inside a Shin Bet intelligence facility located in Petah Tikva near Tel Aviv. Law enforcement detained him on Tuesday over suspicions of contacting a foreign agent. The legal rights group Adalah, which represents his defence, stated the allegations involved receiving foreign funds to support Arab voters in Israel. According to human rights lawyer and legal counsel Hadeel Abu Salih, the suspicions stemmed from a public dialogue he held with Palestinian intellectual Azmi Bishara in Qatar and his media appearances.
Abu Salih told Al Jazeera that law enforcement lacked evidence from the beginning and that the case relied entirely on public conversations. The lawyer added that the Israeli system criminalised political analysis simply because the speakers were Palestinians, while attempting to reclassify him from a journalist to a political counsel. Israeli security forces had arrested Abou Shhadeh during a midnight raid on Tuesday, during which 15 officers searched his Jaffa home and seized personal electronics and books in front of his two children.
Reactions from Defence Team
Adalah founder Hassan Jabareen told Al Jazeera that the five-day detention formed part of a campaign targeting the votes of Arabs and Palestinians in Israel. Jabareen explained that the claims aimed to delegitimise political participation by Palestinian citizens. He noted that Abou Shhadeh travelled to Doha and returned as a journalist, but authorities arrested him as an Arab political figure to claim that Arabs utilize illegal means in Israeli elections.
Following his release, Abou Shhadeh emphasised that the proper response is to remain confident in their path and affirmed his commitment to continuing his journalistic work.
