Meta Alerts Parents to Teen Self-Harm Searches on Facebook

Meta Alerts Parents to Teen Self-Harm Searches on Facebook

Meta is expanding its parental notification system to Facebook and Meta AI to alert caregivers when teens repeatedly search for suicide and self-harm content. The feature builds upon a similar tool introduced for Instagram earlier this year.

Expanded Parental Alerts on Facebook and AI

Under the updated system, Meta will notify parents if a supervised teen repeatedly searches for self-harm material within a brief timeframe. Additionally, parents will receive notifications if their teen interacts with Meta AI in a manner indicating potential risks of suicide or self-harm.

Meta has kept the precise criteria for triggering these alerts intentionally broad. Previously, the company explained that it selected a threshold requiring multiple searches over a short duration while maintaining caution to prevent unnecessary notifications. When a teen reaches this threshold, parents get an alert through text, email, WhatsApp, or a push notification inside their own app.

The notifications omit the exact search terms and the contents of the Meta AI conversations. Instead, the alerts advise parents to converse with their teens and supply resources for helplines.

Integration with Supervised Teen Accounts

This new capability forms part of Meta’s broader initiative to place teenagers into parent-supervised teen accounts. These accounts grant caregivers enhanced oversight regarding privacy settings, restrict interactions with adults, and limit exposure to sensitive materials such as self-harm posts.
