A Guatemalan lawmaker and three police officers have lost their lives in an armed assault, as reported by national authorities. The incident occurred on Friday in the town of Rio Hondo, situated within the eastern Zacapa department.
Details of the Attack and Victims
The target of the Friday assault was Congressman Julio Portillo. Following the shooting, Portillo was transported to a hospital suffering from severe injuries. The National Unity of Hope party, known as UNE, subsequently confirmed his death.
Guatemala’s Congress expressed condolences in a social media statement on Friday, acknowledging Portillo as the representative for the Zacapa district. President Bernardo Arevalo stated that the three National Civil Police officers killed in the incident perished while fulfilling their duties, and he directed security forces to assist prosecutors with the investigation.
Political Background and Security Context
Investigators have not yet revealed a motive behind the violence or named any suspects. The Zacapa department is an area recognized for drug trafficking operations and is controlled by the Lorenzana family cartel, which maintains connections to Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel.
Portillo secured his congressional seat during the 2023 elections representing the opposition party Cabal, but later transitioned to the UNE party, which is led by former First Lady Sandra Torres. Torres anticipates running in the upcoming presidential elections next year.
This violence follows the fatal shooting of former anticorruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Solorzano Foppa in Guatemala City approximately three weeks prior. That previous incident amplified worries regarding the power of organized crime and potential politically driven assassinations, though officials have not linked the two events together.
