The popular fan fiction website Archive of Our Own (AO3) has temporarily shut down following a security incident, leaving millions of users without access to the platform.
Website Outage and Security Updates
An administrator for AO3 announced that the website was down for maintenance, stating that full service could take up to four weeks to restore. The platform might return sooner in a degraded state with certain features disabled.
Subsequent updates from the platform confirmed that a security incident occurred, though officials noted they were still in the early stages of evaluating its scope. Although administrators stated they do not believe the user database was compromised, they advised users to remain cautious and update their passwords.
Fan Reactions and Survival Guides
Operated by the Organization for Transformative Works, a nonprofit preserving internet fandom communities, AO3 launched in 2007 to counter censorship and corporate influence. The platform serves 11 million users and hosts over 18 million original works, bolstered recently by interest in the Heated Rivalry series.
Users responded to the outage with dismay on social media, with one fan account tagging the FBI, CIA, and Uber Support on X. Other community members began compiling Google Docs filled with links to downloaded stories, labeling them as survival guides for an AO3 apocalypse and categorizing them by character pairings.
Additional commentators noted the timing of the disruption during the approach of November. Representatives for the Organization for Transformative Works did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.
The sudden shutdown highlights the central role fan fiction plays in modern entertainment, influencing publishing trends, generating hundreds of millions of views, and serving as a key source for streaming adaptations.
