The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 arrives with larger V8 engine options, a completely redesigned Android-based cabin featuring multiple displays, and advanced towing technology. Engadget tested several different versions of the truck across Tucson, Arizona, finding a compelling vehicle that still requires some refinements.

Engine Options and Performance

Chevrolet offers four distinct engines for the Silverado 1500 lineup. The smallest option is a 2.7-liter turbocharged engine delivering 350 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. A new 5.7-liter V8 replaces the previous 5.3-liter unit, generating 402 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. Another new gasoline option is a 6.6-liter V8 providing 481 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque, while the 5.7-liter V8 achieves the maximum tow rating of 13,700 pounds.

The fourth powertrain choice is a 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engine producing 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque, offering the highest fuel efficiency with an estimated 900 miles of range from a 34-gallon tank. Chevrolet provides seven trim levels for the 1500, beginning at $41,395 for the basic Work Truck and reaching $79,995 for the off-road-focused ZR2 after a $2,795 destination charge.

Interior Redesign and Tech Features

The cabin receives a major overhaul centered around a standard 16.3-inch central touchscreen connected to a 12.2-inch digital gauge cluster. A heads-up display projects speed and safety details onto the glass, while an optional 11.5-inch passenger-side display includes a privacy filter allowing front-seat passengers to stream services like Disney+, Hulu, YouTube, iHeartRadio, and Amazon Music via Bluetooth headsets.

The new Android-based system supports both wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, vehicle settings are scattered across multiple menus, and certain frequently used features—such as the 360-degree camera view—rely on small touchscreen icons that prove challenging to press while driving.

Towing and Driver Assistance

Cameras positioned underneath the ZR2 model help drivers monitor obstacles around the vehicle, while remote cameras enable a transparent trailer mode and interior viewing. The Super Cruise hands-free driving system is now optimized for towing, allowing drivers to maintain a centered position while hauling heavy loads, though a later test drive without a trailer revealed a lane-change error involving a passing motorcycle.

On the road, the Silverado 1500 offers a smooth ride with minor firmness from its live axles, alongside a quiet cabin and spacious Crew Cab seating. During testing with the 5.7-liter V8 engine, the vehicle averaged 16.2 miles per gallon.

The new Silverado package requires a few software updates to reach its full potential, alongside wireless charging features and a range of pricing commitments depending on selected options.
