Republican senator Ted Cruz of Texas has joined party critics in condemning the GOP’s poor performance in the midterm elections, describing the outcome as a severe defeat that cost the party control of Congress.
A Watergate-Level Repudiation
Speaking on his podcast ‘Verdict’, Cruz stated that the election cycle was not merely a bad midterm showing, but a Watergate-level repudiation. He pointed out that voter turnout was not the problem, echoing statements made by Vice-President JD Vance.
According to Cruz, core Republican, Libertarian, and Independent voters went to the polls but chose to reject Republican candidates in favor of Democrats. He emphasized that economic anxiety played a central role in the minds of voters throughout the cycle.
Economic Pressures Drive Voter Rebuke
Cruz highlighted the high cost of daily necessities, stating that prices for food, gasoline, diesel, insurance, and overall living expenses were simply too high. He added that many Republican politicians appeared either unable to comprehend these struggles or indifferent to them.
Looking ahead to his own political future, Cruz, who faces re-election in 2030 and is considered a potential presidential candidate, stressed the need for the party to listen and adapt. He stated that the GOP must champion economic policies that genuinely improve the lives of working people and address the consequences of the election.
Cruz mentioned that he reached out to Democratic senator-elect James Talarico to offer congratulations on his electoral victory.
