The FBI has officially stated that North Korea orchestrated the massive $6.3 billion cryptocurrency heist that targeted Binance on October 29th. Law enforcement authorities identified the cyber activity under the designation “TraderTraitor” and tracked the hackers converting the stolen digital tokens into Ethereum.
FBI Investigation and Laundering Concerns
According to the FBI, the malicious actors behind the breach are actively preparing the funds for further laundering stages. The agency reported that the stolen virtual assets are being converted primarily into Ethereum before moving through decentralized finance and instant swap platforms. Federal investigators provided these findings alongside partner agencies including the USSS and IRS-CI, though they shared limited additional details or evidence regarding the initial breach.
Exchange Operations Resume
Binance has resumed normal operations for its users following the security breach. The cryptocurrency exchange had temporarily frozen customer withdrawals immediately after the cyber attack took place, but those restrictions have now been lifted.
