Longtime Aquarium Shark Howard Dies at Age 30

A sand tiger shark that lived at a Plymouth aquarium since its doors opened nearly 30 years ago has passed away. Staff at the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) announced that Howard, affectionately known as Howie, was euthanized after failing to respond to medical treatment following shifts in her health and behavior.

Life at the Aquarium

During her time at the facility, the shark initially resided in the Great Barrier Reef habitat before transferring to the Atlantic Ocean habitat, where she eventually grew to a length of 9 feet (2.7 meters). Staff noted that the animal was estimated to be nearly 30 years old.

According to the team, the shark served as an exceptional ambassador that helped shatter numerous misconceptions surrounding her critically endangered species.

Tributes and Remaining Sharks

In a statement reported by BBC News, staff expressed deep sorrow over losing such a prominent presence at the facility and thanked visitors for their ongoing support and understanding. Aquarium visitors can still view the remaining sand tiger sharks, Ushaka and Mandela, in the Atlantic Ocean habitat.
