Andreas Almgren Wins New York Marathon on Debut

Andreas Almgren continued his remarkable year by winning the New York Marathon men’s race on his debut over 26.2 miles. The 31-year-old Swede crossed the finish line in two hours, six minutes and one second, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa.

Men’s Race Highlights

Almgren entered the event following a strong year that included breaking the European half-marathon record in September and winning 10,000m gold at the European Athletics Championships in August. Living up to the anticipation surrounding his debut, he held off his competitors to secure victory.

Italy’s Crippa finished second, while Lesotho’s Kamohelo Mofolo took third place, finishing a further 12 seconds behind. With this win, Almgren became the first European-born man in 30 years to win the New York Marathon, following Italy’s Giacomo Leone in 1996.

Reflecting on his performance, Almgren said, “I just thought, ‘I’ve got the legs today’. I’m about to start crying. It’s better than anything I could have ever imagined.”

Women’s Race Results

In the women’s competition, Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui claimed her second New York Marathon success. The 35-year-old completed the course in 2:24:36, holding off American Jessica McClain by six seconds, with Kenya’s Hellen Obiri finishing another second behind in third.

Discussing the closing stages of her race, Chepkirui stated, “The last mile was really tricky and I had to be patient because I knew Hellen was really strong. I had to really push up to the finish line.”

The event marked the 50th anniversary of the marathon, which connects New York’s five boroughs of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan.
