Amazon Adds Camera to Its Top Echo Studio Smart Speaker

Amazon has updated its flagship Echo Studio smart speaker, introducing an integrated camera to the high-end audio device for the first time. First launched in 2019 for users seeking superior sound quality, the latest iteration brings visual capabilities alongside its existing acoustic features.

Audio Specs and New Room Adaptation

The newly unveiled Echo Studio with Home Camera shares most of its acoustic hardware with the standard Echo Studio model. Each device is equipped with a single 3.75-inch high-excursion woofer and three full-range drivers, while supporting Dolby Atmos and Amazon’s proprietary surround-sound effect algorithm for stereo audio. Both versions feature lossless HD audio, noise distortion reduction, and an Advanced Room Adaptation capability. Amazon announced this acoustic calibration feature to continually tune sound output to a specific space by automatically adapting to room acoustics.

Both speakers incorporate four-microphone arrays and the AZ3 Pro processor featuring an integrated AI accelerator designed to run Amazon’s Alexa+ generative AI chatbot. Despite the inclusion of a 13-megapixel camera, the new Echo Studio with Home Camera maintains the exact same physical dimensions as the previous model.

Camera Features and AI Integration

The newly added camera serves multiple functions, starting with spatial audio adjustments. The speaker utilizes the camera to track user location and dynamically modify audio volume, ensuring music or audiobooks maintain consistent loudness as listeners move around the room.

Beyond acoustic adjustments, the device functions as a home security camera. Users can remotely monitor rooms to check on pets or verify if lights were left on. Additionally, Amazon stated that the camera allows Alexa to perceive and interpret its surroundings for real-time assistance. Users can display a board game box for rule explanations or hold up items like cereal boxes to enable Alexa to recognize the product and reorder additional flavors.
