Xbox Manager Deletes Account After Comments on AI in Gaming

An Xbox strategy manager deleted his social media account a day after claiming that artificial intelligence is already widely used in the gaming industry. Brandon Stirrup deactivated his account on X after stating that developers who deny using AI are simply pretending, igniting discussions about the technology’s role in game development.

Industry Stances on Generative AI

Major studios often argue that generative AI should be utilized to accelerate production schedules. Companies such as Capcom, Square Enix, Sega, Nexon, and Activision have integrated AI or committed to doing so. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has also actively promoted AI usage on social media. While industry studies indicate high adoption rates of around 90 percent, critics question the representativeness of those findings due to limited participant pools.

Conversely, many independent studios voice strong opposition to generative AI. Smaller developers without shareholder pressures, including the publishers behind Tunic, Stardew Valley, and Clickolding, reject the practice. Players are similarly divided, with some embracing the technology while others avoid AI-touched games due to environmental concerns, labor issues, or aesthetic preferences, prompting tools like Steam disclosure extensions and AI-free labels.

Impacts and Controversies in Games

The most debated applications involve generating final assets, such as voice acting in The Finals, or placeholder artwork that inadvertently reaches finished releases, as seen in Crimson Desert. Many accept AI for coding assistance even when opposing it elsewhere. Concerns persist that executives might lean on AI promises to justify workforce layoffs, while low-quality cloned games proliferate across platforms like Steam.
