More than 50.5 million Americans have cast early ballots ahead of the US midterm elections, marking a significant surge in voter turnout as tight congressional contests draw high interest.

Surge in Early Voter Turnout

Data from an analysis by the University of Florida shows that total early votes reached over 50.5 million by Saturday morning. This figure exceeds the total number of early votes from the previous midterm elections in 2022 by nearly 5 million ballots.

States that track party affiliation data indicate that voter enthusiasm is strongest among Democrats, with 10.7 million registered Democrats voting early compared with 7.8 million registered Republicans. While these party affiliations do not confirm specific votes, polls have shown widespread dissatisfaction with the presidency of Donald Trump alongside unusually close races in traditionally safe Republican states.

Battleground States and Key Races

Republicans are defending a 53-47 Senate majority while Democrats target victories in conservative-leaning states such as Texas, Alaska, and Kansas to potentially seize Senate control. University of Florida data indicates that over 7 million people have already voted early in Texas, representing an increase of 1.5 million compared with the 2022 midterms.

An analysis by the Associated Press showed that Harris county, which includes Houston, recorded 862,700 early votes as of Wednesday, compared with 564,500 at the same point in 2022. Texas features prominent matchups including Republican attorney general Ken Paxton facing Democrat James Talarico for the Senate, and Republican governor Greg Abbott seeking re-election against Democrat Gina Hinojosa. Substantial financial investments have entered the Senate race, and Trump visited Texas earlier in the week for his third trip there in a month.

The Associated Press also reported increased early voting figures in other competitive Senate races. Early voting rose by 83% in South Carolina, 44% in Maine, 34% in Kansas, and 32% in Michigan compared with the 2022 midterms.

Campaign Context and Issues

The midterm elections will determine the makeup of the US House of Representatives and the Senate for the final two years of Trump’s second term. Voting unfolds against a backdrop of rising costs for food, gasoline, and essentials, ongoing conflict involving Iran, and concerns regarding government corruption.

Trump has faced deep unpopularity among voters and has organized rallies across normally safe states to support struggling Republican candidates. These campaign appearances have involved comments on candidate appearances and dismissals of voter concerns regarding high gasoline prices.

Reflecting on the grueling campaign schedule during a rally in Florida on Friday night, Trump stated, “I thought this was it. I thought I could relax. Twenty-eight days of this crap in a row is a lot. It’s a lot.”
