Two white rhino siblings have marked their first birthday by enjoying specially made cakes constructed from pellets, carrots, and salad leaves.
Growth and Park Milestones
The siblings, named Markus and Mo, were born last year at the Cotswold Wildlife Park, situated near Burford. At birth, both animals weighed approximately 70kg, or 11 stone. Over their first year of life, each rhino has grown to weigh about 500kg, which equals 78 stone.
The birth of the pair brought the total number of rhinos living at the facility to nine. This figure represents the highest number of the animals housed at the park during its 56-year operational history.
Conservation Status
During the early decades of the 20th century, white rhinos faced the brink of extinction, with population estimates suggesting fewer than 50 individuals survived in the wild in Africa. Although they currently represent the most populous group among the five distinct rhino species, the park emphasizes that ongoing conservation efforts remain essential for the protection of the species.
