Phil Parkinson stated that Wrexham need to conduct honest self-assessments following their lacklustre performance against Sheffield United. The Red Dragons fell to a 1-0 defeat at Bramall Lane after Ben Brereton Diaz scored the decisive goal in the 30th minute.
Struggles at Bramall Lane
Parkinson’s side delivered a significantly below-par display in South Yorkshire, particularly during the opening 45 minutes. Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, the manager urged his players to be individually self-analytical and noted that success ultimately comes down to winning individual duels.
Wrexham failed to register a single shot on target until the 96th minute, when Sam Smith attempted a tame header easily gathered by goalkeeper Michael Cooper. In the first half, the visitors completed only nine passes in the final third, trailing their opponents by 68 passes in that area.
Parkinson admitted his team was second best before the break and contrasted the display with previous encounters against the same opponent. He pointed out that previous fixtures featured an underdog mentality and a fierce competitive spirit that was missing on this occasion.
Facing the Criticism
Having taken charge in the summer of 2021, Parkinson guided the club through three consecutive promotions between 2023 and 2025. However, pressure has begun to mount following a slow start to the current campaign that has seen the team lose three of their past four matches.
With upcoming fixtures against promotion contenders Middlesbrough and Wolverhampton Wanderers before the November international window, Parkinson made it clear he will not hide from incoming criticism. He emphasized his resilience built over years as both a player and a manager facing difficult moments.
Wrexham prepare to face Middlesbrough on Wednesday night in their next fixture.
