Aston Villa have announced that they will initiate legal action against former England defender Jamie Carragher over what they describe as unacceptable insults.
Legal Action Announcement
Villa released a statement on social media signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, in which they accused Carragher of insulting both the club and their supporters. The club stated that they would not allow anyone to stop their ascension in English and European football.
The controversy stems from comments Carragher made on the Stick to Football podcast earlier in the week, where he suggested that Villa manager Unai Emery would be interested in becoming the Manchester United head coach. United boss Michael Carrick’s position is currently hanging in the balance following a dismal start to the season.
Podcast Remarks and Backlash
Referring to the former Paris St-Germain and Arsenal boss, Carragher said that Emery would surely want the opportunity to manage a giant club again. He added that there is a chain in football, noting that Real Madrid takes Manchester United’s best players, while teams below Aston Villa take their players or managers.
During the podcast, Carragher also told Aston Villa fans to “shut the [expletive] up” and asserted that Aston Villa will never be Manchester United. Following criticism from Villa fans on social media, the 48-year-old pundit responded by stating that his remark telling them to shut up had been a joke in response to the stick he received for suggesting Emery might fancy joining Manchester United.
Carragher maintained that he had been praising Emery and Villa for years. He expanded on those thoughts on the Overlap Daily, explaining that he considers Unai Emery to be the best manager in the league and that Manchester United would naturally inquire about his availability.
He clarified that he was not claiming Emery would definitely move, but rather sharing what he would do in that position. Carragher reiterated that his original message to the club’s supporters had been meant in jest.
