Meta Settles Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Before Trial

Meta has agreed to a settlement in a social media addiction lawsuit, allowing the technology giant to sidestep a trial that was scheduled to begin next month. The resolution leaves Snap as the sole remaining defendant in the closely watched legal battle against major social media platforms.

Lawsuit Details and Previous Settlements

The legal action was initiated by an 18-year-old plaintiff from Mississippi identified as K.D.B. According to reporting by Reuters cited by Engadget, the young woman stated she stayed awake for hours scrolling through platforms, lost concentration in school, and engaged in self-harm using techniques displayed in online videos. Jury selection for the trial commenced earlier in the week in Los Angeles.

Legal counsel for K.D.B announced on Friday that an agreement had been finalized with Meta following prior settlements with YouTube and TikTok. Attorney Emily Jeffcott stated in a released statement that they remain dedicated to enhancing youth safety on digital platforms and holding technology corporations responsible, expressing satisfaction with reaching a fair resolution for their client.

Financial terms and other specifics of the agreement were not made public, and Meta did not immediately reply to inquiries for comment regarding the outcome.

Remaining Defendants and Defense Statements

Following the agreement, Snap stands as the only defendant left in the proceedings. Chief Executive Officer Evan Spiegel anticipates testifying during the trial, which could extend for multiple weeks. Should he take the witness stand, it will mark the initial appearance of the Snap founder in a social media addiction courtroom proceeding. Snap previously resolved a separate high-profile case featuring comparable accusations, though a subsequent jury verdict in another trial ordered Meta and YouTube to pay $6 million in damages.

A spokesperson for Snap declined to address Meta’s recent agreement in an official statement, but asserted that the lawsuit distorts the core functionality of Snapchat. The spokesperson explained that the platform was designed differently from conventional social media by opening directly to a camera rather than a content feed or social comparison metrics. They added that the company has implemented safeguards, safety tools, and educational resources, and expressed confidence that evidence will demonstrate their commitment to the community.

Both Meta and Snap have encountered numerous lawsuits concerning accusations of safety deficiencies and addictive platform designs. Snap additionally finalized a settlement regarding a prolonged legal dispute over its speed filter, which plaintiffs claimed contributed to severe automobile collisions involving teenagers.
