Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has suffered what is believed to be the largest crypto hack in history, losing $6.3bn (£4.7bn). Richard Teng, Binance’s co-chief executive officer, stated that the company is collaborating with authorities to investigate the breach and will cover all customer losses.

How the Breach Occurred

The security incident targeted Binance’s global centralised platform, Binance.com, while Binance.us confirmed its operations remained unaffected. Teng explained in an initial statement that the breach likely originated from a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which granted an attacker access to a service container to submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions.

Teng described the event as a complex attack process rather than a simple action. Raghu Nandakumara, vice president of industry strategy at cybersecurity platform Illumio, suggested an engineer may have been manipulated into taking a test, allowing malware to land on their device. Because the laptop possessed sufficient security privileges, it served as a direct route into production systems and digital wallets, according to early reports.

Teng noted that multiple individuals executed the attack, utilizing sophisticated methods like a self-destruct mechanism to conceal their actions. Dr Clive Summerfield, head of biometrics in AI security company FARx, stated that mathematical firewalls cannot protect a vault if the keyholder is deceived.

Investigation and Potential Suspects

While definitive confirmation is pending, several analytics firms have pointed toward North Korea as the possible actor behind the breach. TRM Labs, an AI-powered investigations company, reported that multiple elements of the Binance incident mirrored earlier cyber-attacks linked to the territory, including a $1.5bn (£1.1bn) hack on the ByBit exchange in 2025.

Previous attacks have been associated with the Lazarus Group, also known as TraderTraitor, a cluster of cyber-criminals accused of working directly for the regime. Dr Edward Howell, a North Korea foreign policy expert from the University of Oxford, reported to BBC News that Pyongyang operates a state-run cyber warfare agency used to finance weapons of mass destruction and fund leader Kim Jong Un’s regime. Howell added that approximately 40 to 50 percent of North Korea’s weapons programs are supported through cyber and cryptocurrency warfare. North Korea consistently denies involvement in these operations.

Impact on Users and Financial Markets

Teng assured users that their funds remain safe, noting that all deposits and withdrawals were temporarily suspended as a precaution. Binance intends to cover all losses using its emergency reserve and company funds, and has successfully worked with partners to freeze around $3bn of the affected assets. Users seeking to check their account balances are advised by experts to use official applications and websites while remaining alert to potential secondary scams.

Jennifer Craven, an international commercial fraud expert at law firm Pinsent Masons, stated that the incident highlights the fragility of the wider crypto ecosystem. She noted that regulators will question what the breach means for smaller, less mature platforms and likely increase scrutiny on infrastructure and customer protection. The event also aligns with broader financial industry concerns regarding whether AI agents could exploit software vulnerabilities faster than human engineers can resolve them.

Crypto has gained widespread popularity for allowing online investments and money transfers without central bank or government control. According to Solcard, a crypto-funded prepaid payment and virtual card platform, between 560 million and 741 million people owned cryptocurrency worldwide by 2026.
