Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has bestowed the Order of Princess Olha, 1st Class, upon US First Lady Melania Trump. The honor, which serves as Ukraine’s highest award for women, was granted in recognition of her significant personal contributions to humanitarian support for the nation.
Diplomatic Efforts in Oleshky
The award follows the conclusion of a ceasefire in the southern Kherson region, which facilitated the evacuation of hundreds of civilians from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. According to the White House, Melania Trump independently initiated engagement between the two warring nations, successfully securing the truce. The White House described the move as an unprecedented diplomatic initiative by an American First Lady.
While both Russian and Ukrainian officials have expressed gratitude toward Melania Trump for her role in the mediation, neither side has provided specific details regarding the extent of her involvement. The First Lady has historically maintained a discreet profile on foreign policy, though she noted in 2025 that an open channel of communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin had been established to assist in reuniting displaced Ukrainian children with their families.
Upcoming White House Meetings
In response to the ceasefire, delegations from Russia and Ukraine are scheduled to meet at the White House on Thursday at the invitation of Melania Trump. The Ukrainian delegation will include human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and MP Davyd Arakhamia, who leads Zelensky’s party in parliament and has previously participated in peace negotiations. The Russian delegation will consist of ombudsman Yana Lantratova and senior official Kirill Dmitriev.
Lubinets and Lantratova previously traveled together into Oleshky last week, marking a rare instance of cooperation between the two nations. Arakhamia, who reportedly managed informal communications between the White House and Moscow during the ceasefire, confirmed his attendance. Melania Trump is expected to deliver remarks regarding the Oleshky ceasefire at 11:00 local time (16:00 GMT) on Thursday.
Humanitarian and Future Security Concerns
Zelensky’s decree also highlighted Melania Trump’s broader humanitarian efforts, particularly those concerning Ukrainian children impacted by the conflict. The United Nations has previously characterized the forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia as a war crime and a crime against humanity. Ukrainian officials estimate that nearly 20,000 children have been illegally moved to Russia and Belarus since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
Looking ahead, representatives from the United States, Ukraine, and Russia are slated to convene in Abu Dhabi next week. US envoy Steve Witkoff stated that this trilateral meeting will focus on postwar security agreements and de-escalation efforts.
