A United States cruise ship has suspended its multi-year, around-the-world voyage after arriving in Cambodia, leaving hundreds of passengers to disembark without a confirmed departure date. The MV Odyssey, managed by Villa Vie Residences based in Florida, docked at the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville last Friday.
Rising Fuel Expenses and Regional Disruptions
Villa Vie Residences explained that monthly fuel expenses per cabin, which traditionally averaged $1,800, surged to between $6,000 and $8,000 across parts of Asia. The company attempted to lower energy consumption by reducing the vessel’s speed and extending port stays, but these measures failed to balance the escalating expenses.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Villa Vie Residences stated that it could no longer absorb the ongoing operational losses, noting that passing the complete price surge onto residents was an unrealistic alternative. Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has decreased since the war in Iran started, tightening petroleum-based fuel supplies and driving up prices across Southeast Asia.
Passenger Impact and Experiences
Cambodian authorities reported that the vessel carried 203 passengers, primarily Americans, along with 156 crew members. Several travelers stated they were given just seven hours of notice to leave the ship and had to organize their own lodging.
Retired Wyoming residents Paul and Lynn Montoya boarded the vessel 17 months prior, anticipating years of living at sea. They pointed out that the company had previously faced difficulties with route adjustments, inconsistent internet connectivity, and dropping food standards. Lynn Montoya mentioned feeling exhausted by ongoing requests for extra money for fuel and other expenses every few weeks, while also alleging poor management and unpaid staff members.
Conversely, other travelers expressed hope that a new operator or a collective effort by residents might revive the project. Carol Larson, a 69-year-old passenger who purchased her cabin for $120,000 through installment payments, stated she had no regrets about taking the gamble despite the halt. She expressed gratitude for being involved in the residential cruising experiment.
Background and Next Steps
The vessel departed from Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024 on an itinerary initially scheduled for three and a half years. Constructed in 1993, the ship was acquired by Villa Vie Residences in 2023 to provide long-term living accommodations, with lifetime suites initially starting at approximately $230,000.
Local officials in Cambodia indicated that the ship was scheduled to refuel and depart on Saturday, though the operator had not publicly verified a departure schedule.
