Sony developing film adaptation of indie horror game Mouthwashing

The viral indie horror game Mouthwashing is being adapted into a movie by Sony Pictures Entertainment, which acquired the rights from developer Wrong Organ, as reported by Engadget citing The Hollywood Reporter. Karyn Kusama, known for directing Jennifer’s Body and The Invitation, is attached to direct the project.

Creative Team and Production

The screenplay will be written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who previously penned The Invitation. Scott Derrickson, director of The Black Phone and Sinister, is set to produce the film. Sony aims to replicate the triumph of its previous video game adaptations, such as Zach Cregger’s successful take on Capcom’s survival horror series Resident Evil, which achieved both critical praise and box office success.

Story and Game Availability

Mouthwashing features a more grounded and psychological tone compared to the campier style of Resident Evil. The narrative centers on a stranded spaceship crew gradually losing their sanity, relying on heavy themes and surreal imagery rather than constant jump scares.

While the movie does not yet have a release date, the original game originally launched on PC in 2024 and has expanded to additional platforms including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Game Pass.
