Amazon has unveiled a series of new and updated smart home products, headlined by major upgrades to its Echo smart speaker lineup. The latest generation of devices introduces advanced features, including built-in home monitoring cameras and integrated Wi-Fi extension capabilities.
Echo Studio Adds a Built-In Camera
The premium Echo Studio now features a camera option for live in-home monitoring, according to CNET. Priced at $250, the Echo Studio with Home Camera functions as a nanny cam, allowing users to monitor family members and pets through a live video feed. Buyers can also purchase the standard Echo Studio without a camera for $220, while an optional stand is available separately for $39.99.
Amazon stated that the Home Camera gives Alexa visual intelligence to enhance daily experiences. The assistant can view and comprehend items placed in front of the lens, such as explaining board game rules or recognizing a cereal box to facilitate reordering.
The updated speaker maintains its audio performance with a high-excursion woofer, three full-range drivers, and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. Additional audio features include Advanced Room Adaptation, which optimizes sound based on room acoustics, and Adaptive Volume, which adjusts output according to the user’s proximity to the device.
Echo Dot Functions as a Hub and Wi-Fi Extender
The compact Echo Dot has received functional updates, incorporating both a smart home hub and a built-in Wi-Fi extender. The integrated hub allows users to connect and manage compatible devices like smart lights, locks, and thermostats without requiring a separate standalone hub.
The new iteration includes an Eero Wi-Fi extender that expands existing network coverage by up to 1,000 square feet. Powered by Amazon’s custom AZ3 silicon chip, the Echo Dot supports advanced on-device processing for faster interactions with Alexa Plus.
The standard Echo Dot is priced at $99.99 and comes in Graphite, Glacier White, Agave Green, and Coral Pink. Additionally, the Amazon Kids Echo Dot is offered in Octopus and Penguin designs starting at $109.99, alongside other newly announced hardware including an alarm clock with deep-sleep detection and a smart frame.
