Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk as a “real genius” on Wednesday, revealing that the two are in close communication regarding satellite technology. The Russian leader made the remarks during the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow while discussing the country’s satellite internet initiative, Rassvet.
Satellite Coordination and Orbit Management
Putin stated that Musk is a genius and confirmed ongoing discussions between Russian officials and their American partners, mentioning Musk directly. He explained that maintaining communication with the SpaceX chief is essential to ensure that Russian Rassvet satellites and Musk’s Starlink constellation do not interfere with one another while in orbit. According to Putin, both sides value this cooperation and continue to work together despite existing political tensions.
SpaceX reports having launched approximately 13,000 Starlink satellites, while online satellite trackers indicate that Russia currently has only a couple of dozen Rassvet satellites in orbit. The Russian Embassy in South Africa described Rassvet as Russia’s alternative to Starlink, noting that the project represents the nation’s initial steps in this sector and confirming ongoing space-related communication with the US and Musk.
Geopolitical Context and US Relations
The discussion regarding satellite coordination occurs as diplomatic ties between the US and Russia appear to be shifting. Ukrainian forces, which previously utilized Starlink internet to counter Russian military operations, experienced sudden connectivity issues last week—a disruption Musk later acknowledged was intentionally executed by SpaceX.
Simultaneously, US President Donald Trump announced earlier this month that he reached an agreement with Russia to import diesel to reduce high gas prices driven by the US conflict with Iran, followed by the waiving of certain planned sanctions against Russia. Shortly after these developments, a US citizen was freed from Russian detention, with US envoy Steve Witkoff describing Putin as a humanitarian.
Musk, originally from South Africa, immigrated to Canada before moving to the United States, where his companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink operate primarily out of California and Texas. The billionaire businessman has emerged as a prominent political supporter and financial contributor for Donald Trump and various other Republican politicians in the United States.
