Hegseth Fires Top Military Planner Amid Iran Strike Concerns

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has reportedly dismissed the Pentagon’s top military planner amid concerns that Washington might resume strikes on Iran following the midterm elections.

Military Dismissal and Regional Warnings

Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia was removed from his position as head of strategy, plans, and policy on the Joint Staff, according to the Associated Press. The dismissal came without any official reason, and no successor has been named. Sylvia has subsequently retired, as reported by ABC News based on information from two individuals familiar with the situation.

The Associated Press also reported that American officials have advised several Middle Eastern nations to brace for potential renewed military actions against Iran following the upcoming midterm elections, alongside preparations for any subsequent Iranian retaliation.

Peace Talks and Diplomatic Efforts

In a separate development, the Wall Street Journal reported that Vice President JD Vance transmitted a letter to Iran, reaching out to a prominent hard-liner in an attempt to restart peace negotiations.

President Donald Trump minimized the significance of these peace discussions when speaking with reporters. He stated that Iran requires assistance with medical supplies and other items, and mentioned that Vance sought his opinion before sending the letter, telling him that proceeding with it was acceptable if he wished to do so.

Responding from Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X late Wednesday that Iran continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed. He explained that Tehran maintains close and continuous communication with intermediaries to evaluate proposals aimed at implementing their 7-Day Plan in an even shorter timeframe.

The 7-day plan was introduced last month, with Tehran stating that the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened and standard maritime transit restored provided specific conditions are satisfied. These conditions reportedly involve halting hostilities and unfreezing Iranian assets, after which Tehran would restore normal commercial shipping through the strait and restart negotiations with Washington.
