Google’s Zelda Easter Egg Takes Search Back to 1998

Google has introduced a special Easter egg on its search engine to celebrate the release of Nintendo’s remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The feature transports users back to 1998, which was the release year of the original video game.

How to Find the Zelda Easter Egg

Users who visit Google.com and search for the term “Zelda” will notice the game’s iconic Master Sword appear in the bottom right corner of the display screen. In the original Nintendo title, the sword functions as a tool for traveling through time. A similar result occurs when searching for the phrase “Master Sword.”

Clicking on the sword triggers an animation where the weapon thrusts into a pedestal, transforming the interface into a pre-2000s search page. The retro view features traditional blue links, the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, and an older version of the company logo that includes an exclamation point. Google officially dropped the exclamation mark from its official branding in 1999.

The Retro Search Experience

The nostalgic interface completely omits modern additions such as advertisements, artificial intelligence overviews, and random social media posts. The simplified, uncluttered layout offers a completely different aesthetic compared to the standard modern search view.

This nostalgic transformation is temporary and reverts to the standard version of Google Search as soon as a new search query is entered into the retro interface.
