When AirPods experience frequent disconnections, the cause is often not hardware damage but rather software settings bouncing the earbuds between multiple devices. Troubleshooting involves a process of elimination, beginning with the automatic switching feature available on AirPods 2 or later, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.

Adjusting Automatic Switching Across Apple Devices

Users who utilize their AirPods across an iPhone, iPad, and Mac may find that disconnections are actually the AirPods attempting to switch back and forth between these devices. To stop this behavior, changes must be made on all linked devices.

The necessary setting is labeled Connect to this iPhone, iPad, or Mac. After putting the AirPods in your ears, navigate to the Settings app on an iPhone or iPad, select your AirPods, go to Audio and Routing, choose Connect to this iPhone or iPad, and select When Last Connected to This iPhone or iPad.

For Mac users, open System Settings, select Bluetooth, and click the information icon next to the AirPods. If they are currently connected, access the Audio and Routing menu first, then select Connect to This Device and choose When Last Connected to This Device.

Users who primarily rely on one device should leave the setting on Automatic for that specific device and switch it to When Last Connected on all other Apple devices. Alternatively, users can permanently remove unused devices by selecting Forget This Device in the Bluetooth menu.

Managing Automatic Ear Detection and Interference

If disconnections persist, users should verify whether the earbuds have actually disconnected by checking the Bluetooth menu. AirPods feature an enabled-by-default function called Automatic Ear Detection, which pauses playback when an earbud is removed.

A misbehaving sensor can interrupt music playback unexpectedly. Users can test the physical fit by accessing the Ear Tip Fit Test in the AirPods menu to ensure a proper seal, and they should regularly clean both the AirPods and the charging case to remove earwax or lint that might block electrical contacts.

To disable the sensor, users can navigate to Settings, select AirPods, go to Audio and Routing, and turn off Automatic Ear Detection on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Further troubleshooting involves checking whether issues occur with downloaded media versus streamed media, as network issues or interference from microwaves, heavy Wi-Fi activity, or other Bluetooth devices can cause audio stuttering. Additionally, users can turn off Siri by going to Settings, selecting Siri and Requests, and setting the top option to Off, though this disables the assistant for the entire device.

Troubleshooting Mac Disconnections and Updates

Users experiencing disconnections specifically on a Mac should first disable automatic switching on their other devices to prevent conflicts over audio control. Opening the Control Center in the top-right corner of the Mac screen, selecting Sound, and confirming the output is set to the AirPods can also resolve routing issues.

Mac users should quit any applications competing for audio control, verify that the Mac operating system is up to date, and allow any pending AirPods firmware updates to install. Firmware updates require placing both earbuds inside the charging case, connecting the case to power, closing the lid, and leaving them within Bluetooth range of a connected Apple device for at least 30 minutes.

If connection failures continue, users can unpair the AirPods from the Mac, restart the computer, and pair the earbuds again. As a final option, users can perform a full factory reset on their AirPods by following official Apple support guidance specific to their model.
