Amazon introduced its inaugural digital picture frame alongside a new lineup of Echo gadgets, arriving ahead of the holiday shopping season. CNET got an early look at the Alexa Photo Frame during a New York launch event, noting several distinctive design choices and features absent from standard frames.
Smart Features and Curation
The device synchronizes directly with Amazon Photos to automatically select top-quality images, sparing users from looping through hundreds of unwanted pictures. Prime members receive unlimited storage for the frame, which integrates built-in Alexa functionality to let users search for specific images using voice commands.
Users can retrieve specific pictures by saying prompts like asking for a selfie with a celebrity or generating custom slideshows using conversational commands. While other manufacturers have explored generative AI frames, this hybrid Alexa integration offers a unique approach that sets it apart from existing models.
Display and Design
The 10-inch high-definition display features a semi-matte, anti-glare finish designed to mimic a traditional printed photograph while maintaining visibility from multiple angles. A built-in light sensor automatically modifies screen brightness depending on ambient room lighting from day to night.
The hardware includes textured, soft-white matting paired with genuine wood frames in walnut or lighter birch, alongside a standard black option. This marks a significant shift away from the typical plain plastic designs common in the digital frame market.
Additional Features and Pricing
The device also includes an unusual feature that allows users to attach voice notes to pictures to preserve the story behind a given memory. The Alexa Photo Frame launches immediately, priced at $200 for the black plastic model and $229 for the walnut or birch wood finishes.
