Arsenal’s Carabao Cup last-16 tie against Fleetwood Town was temporarily stopped for more than eight minutes after an unauthorized drone was spotted flying above Highbury Stadium shortly after kickoff.
Match Suspended Early in First Half
Referee Michael Salisbury halted play with just one minute and 40 seconds on the clock, right as Arsenal prepared to take a free-kick. Salisbury consulted with management and staff on both benches while local police initiated an investigation into the device.
While waiting for the situation to clear, players passed footballs around to maintain their warmth, and spectators voiced their frustration by booing. Just as the referee instructed team captains and managers to move off the pitch, the drone drifted away from the venue and eventually dropped to the ground in a nearby housing estate. Commentators later noted that law enforcement had identified the drone operator.
Action resumed at the ten-minute mark, with seven minutes of stoppage time appended to the first half. Fleetwood eventually secured a famous upset victory against the Premier League side in a penalty shootout.
Regulatory Protocols and Statements
Addressing the interruption on BBC Radio 5 Live, commentator Ian Dennis lamented the timing of the disturbance during a major occasion for the host club. “What a shame this has happened. This is the most high-profile game in the club’s history. In terms of the profile and the revenue, it’s so lucrative,” Dennis said.
Official Football Association directives dictate that referees must suspend play upon spotting a drone until it leaves the stadium perimeter. Had the drone remained overhead, guidelines required both squads to retreat to their respective changing rooms.
The English Football League, which introduced a specific drone policy ahead of the 2023/24 season, stated that safety officers collaborate directly with police, match officials, and the control room to evaluate potential public safety threats.
“As happened this evening, they work collaboratively to ensure that the drone is removed and the game restarted promptly and safely,” the EFL said.
