Matic is launching its first new model since its 2023 debut, introducing the Matic Serene robotic floor cleaner. The main upgrade for the new cleaner is noise reduction, promising an output of just 52 decibels at its highest suction level. It is available now with a price tag of $1,695, which is $200 more than the current price of the original Matic, though an upgrade path is being offered to existing owners.
Designed for Noise-Sensitive Users
According to Matic cofounder and president Mehul Nariyawala in an interview with The Verge, the Serene targets individuals who are extremely noise sensitive. Nariyawala noted that aside from the noise reduction, the device is otherwise identical to the original Matic. The improvement is achieved through a new hardware stack, and current owners will have the option to request a Serene hardware upgrade for their existing units in early 2027.
Many owners frequently shut off loud robot vacuums out of frustration, preventing them from finishing their cleaning tasks. While numerous robotic vacuums feature quiet modes, they typically sacrifice suction power and cleaning effectiveness. In contrast, the Matic Serene operates at maximum power while maintaining a volume of 52 decibels. Nariyawala explained that the device remains very quiet on both carpets and hard surfaces, with the brush roll being the primary sound users will hear. Meanwhile, the original Matic, which runs at 55 decibels, will remain on the market for $1,495.
Addressing Common Robot Vacuum Flaws
Matic uses a different form factor and navigation system compared to the lidar-based disc vacuums common from brands like iRobot, Roborock, and Dreame. Nariyawala explained to The Verge that the company built the Matic to combat the seven deadly sins of robot vacuums, placing high importance on noise, getting stuck, and getting trapped under furniture.
While standard robot vacuums often reach around 70 decibels on high-power settings and drop to 55 or 60 decibels in quiet modes by reducing suction, the original Matic launched at 55 decibels on its highest setting. Lowering that volume by another 3 decibels with the Serene could significantly benefit users who run their cleaners while at home. The original model allows for use during work from home hours, though phone calls sometimes necessitate turning it off, an interruption the Serene might eliminate.
Current owners can upgrade their devices by paying the price difference between what they originally paid and the $1,695 cost of the Serene. Because the original Matic has experienced multiple price increases over time from its initial $1,095 launch price up to its current $1,495 cost, the upgrade fee will vary depending on the original purchase date.
