Modern digital calendars offer much more than just a large screen for Google Calendar, often functioning as family chore trackers, digital photo frames, and meal planners. WIRED reports that while Skylight remains a popular choice for its overall experience, users must pay a subscription fee to unlock features like photo screensavers and meal planning.
The Subscription-Free Alternative
WIRED notes that Everblog’s HomeCal provides a very similar user experience to Skylight without requiring a subscription for any of its features. The device includes dedicated tabs for tracking chores, to-dos, rewards, and meal planning. Users can set up the calendars and organize family member profiles using the accompanying mobile app. While the photo uploader tool in the Everblog app is slower than Skylight’s because it only permits uploading one image at a time, the lack of a recurring fee makes it a worthwhile trade-off.
Design and Accessories
The HomeCal features a 21.5-inch screen that offers a large display while remaining easy to place in a home. The device includes wall-mounting hardware and a flat bottom that allows it to stand on a tabletop. However, a separate Calendar Stand priced at $39 is recommended for enhanced tabletop stability since the standalone unit can wobble. Additionally, optional wood frames are available for $99 to help the device match home decor.
The Everblog HomeCal is currently on sale at Amazon for $300, marking a $100 discount, and is available for $50 off directly from the Everblog website. These savings provide flexibility for buyers considering the optional accessories.
