Camera gear manufacturer Wandrd has launched a new magnetic camera strap system designed to make attaching and removing camera straps faster and easier. The product line introduces a quick-connect setup that uses magnets to guide connectors into place, offering an alternative to traditional anchor designs.
Innovative Magnetic Mechanisms and Safety Features
The system relies on circular anchors called Torus Links that attach directly to a camera body’s eyelets. Rated to hold up to 198 pounds, each anchor features a color-coded safety warning system beneath its outer fabric. If the black fabric wears down to reveal yellow material, the link requires replacement, while a visible red layer indicates the user should cease using the connector immediately. Wandrd backs the anchors with a two-year warranty.
Unlike standard solid anchors, Wandrd’s Torus Links feature a hollow center. Embedded magnets inside the strap guide the anchor into a specialized CoreLock mechanism, which pinches into the center hole of the link to lock the camera in place. To detach the camera, users press a dual-pinch release mechanism, preventing accidental disconnects. Wandrd cofounder Ryan Cope told WIRED that a camera strap like this had long been at the back of the team’s minds as they worked on ways to improve gear for photographers.
Versatile Configurations and Ergonomic Build
In hands-on testing by WIRED, the magnetic guidance allowed for rapid, single-handed strap removal and reattachment during shoots. The strap design also supports a single-point sling setup using a built-in Torus Loop on the buckle, allowing photographers to unclip their camera while keeping the strap secured across their torso.
“I love magnets, man,” Cope told WIRED. “I love the simplicity they create—guiding things into place. You don’t always have a place to put your camera down; I like that magnets help guide them and are a lot more secure, and they’re also just fun.”
To maximize comfort, Wandrd spent two years engineering a custom tubular webbing called liquid nylon, which features soft edges to prevent neck chafing during extended use. The system avoids using external metal components to reduce the risk of scratching camera equipment.
Wandrd is offering several configurations for the line. A standalone DIY kit priced at $29 permits users to adapt existing third-party straps to the CoreLock system. Dedicated offerings include a wrist strap for $39, a 15-mm Lite strap for $49, and a standard 30-mm strap kit available for $69.
