Stephen Miller, Donald Trump’s controversial aide and the architect of his immigration crackdown, has praised the president following his appointment as White House chief of staff. Making his first public remarks since the announcement, Miller pledged absolute loyalty to Trump as the administration faces concerns of doubling down on a far-right immigration platform.

Praise and Loyalty

Speaking at an event on Friday evening alongside his boss, Miller stated that the United States would not exist without Donald Trump, crediting him with saving the country, its military, economy, and borders from destruction. He added that Trump rescued the Republican party from historical obscurity and strengthened it.

Expressing gratitude for his new position, Miller stated it is the honor of his life and swore his absolute loyalty, unwavering commitment, and total devotion to the president’s success and the nation. Miller is scheduled to begin his role as chief of staff on Monday.

Electoral Setbacks and Criticism

Miller’s appointment comes in the wake of the US midterm elections, where Republicans suffered significant losses. By Saturday morning, Republicans had lost seven Senate seats—with Alaska and Mississippi remaining uncalled—along with 42 seats in the House of Representatives and five gubernatorial races.

Senior Republicans such as JD Vance attributed the electoral losses to the Iran war and tariffs, which are core pillars of Trump’s agenda. Meanwhile, figures like Roger Stone and Caroline Wren referred to Miller as the president’s wartime consigliere, countering Trump’s recent suggestions that he might work with Democrats following their takeover of the US Congress.

The appointment has drawn criticism from Democrats and certain Republicans. Republican congressman Marlin Stutzman of Indiana called the decision horrible in remarks to Politico, while outgoing Nebraska congressman Don Bacon told CNN that Miller will maintain an antagonistic relationship with many and alienated Hispanic voters in Texas and Arizona.

Cabinet Adjustments and Interviews

Trump announced Miller’s appointment while noting he anticipates making a few changes to his team. In an interview with 60 Minutes scheduled to air on Sunday, Trump stated he loves his cabinet but may implement changes without naming individuals.

When questioned about his confidence in defense secretary Pete Hegseth, whose future has been questioned following the midterm losses, Trump affirmed his confidence but did not credit him for military successes. Previously, following reports that he might replace Susie Wiles as chief of staff, Trump had insisted there was zero chance of that occurring.
