Tesla Ends Texas Cybertruck Production for Cybercab

Tesla is winding down production of its Cybertruck pickup at the Texas Gigafactory by the middle of 2027, according to an announcement by CEO Elon Musk on X. The factory floor will be repurposed to ramp up manufacturing of the upcoming autonomous Cybercab instead, leaving the future of the stainless-steel truck uncertain.

Production Cuts and Uncertain Future

Musk did not clarify whether production of the unconventional electric vehicle would be entirely discontinued at another location. The futuristic truck has struggled with weak sales performance and export limitations since deliveries began in late 2023.

The vehicle first generated massive attention upon its November 2019 unveiling due to its unprecedented design. However, the company failed to meet its initial $39,900 price promise, eventually pricing the base model at $59,900.

Recalls and Sales Struggles

The truck encountered numerous quality control grievances and multiple official recalls alongside its polarizing aesthetic. Consequently, Tesla managed to sell only around 71,000 units, falling well short of the initial annual projection of 250,000 vehicles.

The upcoming Cybercab robotaxi, which features no steering wheel or pedals, will take over the manufacturing space. However, that autonomous vehicle faces its own hurdles, including an ongoing federal investigation and years of delayed progress toward fully self-driving technology.
