2026 iPad mini Review: Apple Upgrades the Compact Tablet

The iPad mini has historically functioned as a niche device, appealing to users seeking a compact, portable tablet primarily for gaming or watching media. While its smaller display and limited processing power previously constrained its broader appeal, the latest version elevates its competitiveness with a current chip, improved speakers, and a notable screen upgrade.

Upgraded Display and Slimmer Design

The most striking update on the 2026 iPad mini is its transition from an 8.3-inch IPS screen to an 8.5-inch OLED display that competes effectively with other high-end tablets. Although the 0.2-inch size increase sounds modest, it noticeably improves usability on a small device by offering more room for photos, videos, documents, and multitasking with multiple windows.

Apple addressed previous criticisms regarding thick bezels by shrinking them by 24 percent, allowing a larger screen to fit inside a slightly more compact chassis. The 2026 model measures 7.69 by 5.22 by 0.21 inches and weighs 0.56 pounds, compared to the 2024 version’s dimensions of 7.69 by 5.3 by 0.25 inches and 0.65-pound weight. Despite these hardware improvements, the tablet’s pricing remains a hurdle, costing only $50 less than the larger and more powerful 11-inch iPad Air.
