A British national located in the Democratic Republic of Congo has contracted the Ebola virus, the UK government has officially confirmed. The Foreign Office stated that established procedures for managing such situations have been activated, while emphasizing that the risk to the general public remains low.
Outbreak Context and Patient Details
This marks the first confirmed case of a UK citizen catching Ebola during the ongoing outbreak in DR Congo, which has caused over 5,000 deaths. Reuters reported that the infected individual is a healthcare worker and will be repatriated to the UK, though BBC News noted it has not seen the internal document containing this information. The UK government did not officially confirm whether the patient would be flown home for medical care, although a UK resident exposed to the virus in July was previously evacuated for treatment, alongside past cases of infected nationals.
The current epidemic in DR Congo began in May and has recorded more than 10,000 confirmed cases, making it the second most deadly outbreak of the virus in history and the deadliest ever recorded in the country. Statistics from the end of last month indicated a fatality rate of 48.6 percent. This specific outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo variant of the virus, for which no approved vaccine currently exists, and additional cases have been confirmed in Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda.
History of Ebola in the UK
Imported cases of Ebola are exceptionally rare in the United Kingdom and have historically resulted in zero fatalities. Only four prior confirmed cases of the virus have been documented in the UK. These included a 1976 laboratory incident and three instances involving healthcare workers who responded to the West African outbreak between 2014 and 2015.
Ebola is a severe illness that can lead to organ failure, internal bleeding, and death. Initial symptoms feature vomiting and diarrhea, and the virus transmits between people through direct contact with infected bodily fluids such as blood or vomit. The UK government stated that additional information will be released in due course when appropriate.
