Almost 30 years after its initial release, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time returns with overhauled graphics and quality-of-life improvements. As reported by Engadget, the classic title preserves its original story and gameplay while offering a fresh experience on the Nintendo Switch 2.
A Nostalgic Yet Modern Aesthetic
The 2026 release replaces blocky polygons with high-resolution models while maintaining the feel of the 1998 original. Art director Aya Shida explained in a recent interview that the development team aimed to rebuild Hyrule while keeping the original atmosphere, incorporating inspirations from puppet shows and practical film effects.
The reviewer noted that certain features, such as Young Link’s oversized eyes and the water’s slimy cast on characters, might look a bit odd. However, the overall visual update succeeds in creating a gorgeous and nostalgic aesthetic.
Atmospheric Enhancements and Core Gameplay
Improved graphics introduce new battle animations and special effects, including particle effects during enemy attacks and lingering dungeon fog. These subtle tweaks enhance the atmosphere, making locations like the Forest Temple spookier and Death Mountain more treacherous.
Unlike other major remakes, Nintendo left the core story and mechanics intact, serving as an influence for modern role-playing games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring. The simplistic combat and puzzle-solving remain refreshing and welcoming to younger players.
Quality-of-Life Upgrades
Nintendo implemented several modern adjustments, including a fully adjustable camera, an updated quick item menu, and the new Threads of Time system to help players track quests. Link can now sprint by holding the A button after rolling, early rupee farming has been balanced, and Navi the fairy offers fewer interruptions.
Engadget concludes that the new version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a masterpiece reborn, appealing to both nostalgic fans and younger generations experiencing Link’s first 3D adventure for the first time.
