Tributes have poured in following the death of former European champion and two-time Olympic runner Ciara Mageean at the age of 34. The athlete from Portaferry in County Down passed away on Sunday morning, surrounded by her loved ones, less than three weeks after her marriage to long-term partner Thomas Moran.
Athletic Career and Cancer Diagnosis
Mageean was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025. Throughout her career, she represented Ireland at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games and claimed gold in the 1500m at the European Athletics Championships in Rome in 2024. She also represented Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games, securing a silver medal in Birmingham in 2022, and was named the 2023 BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year.
A statement posted on her social media accounts remembered her as a beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend, and inspiration to many. World Athletics and Athletics Ireland praised her historic achievements and lasting legacy, while Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland chief executive Conal Heatley told BBC News NI that she carried herself with incredible dignity throughout her illness.
Tributes From Sports and Political Figures
Olympic legend Lady Mary Peters recalled Mageean as a gracious, talented, and inspirational figure, noting that the Mary Peters Trust had supported her early career. Sean Young, secretary of Portaferry Gaelic Athletic Club where Mageean played camogie in her youth, expressed shock at the loss of the fierce competitor, while the Down GAA praised her for never forgetting her roots.
Political leaders also honored the late athlete. Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill called Mageean a champion and role model who represented her country with pride, and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly praised her honesty regarding her health battles. Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris extended their sympathies, noting how her openness about her illness gave strength and hope to others.
Broadcasters and public figures who interviewed Mageean, including Thomas Niblock and Patrick Kielty, remembered her warmth, humility, and positive impact on everyone she met. Her former school, Assumption Grammar in Ballynahinch, shared that her kindness, strength, and unwavering determination touched countless lives.
