A resident in Washington state has died from bird flu following exposure at an infected dairy farm, state health officials announced on Sunday. This marks the third human death from the virus in the United States since the H5 avian influenza strain spread from wild migratory birds to dairy cows in March 2024.
Patient Details and Health Risk
The victim resided in Yakima County and suffered from underlying health conditions that potentially increased vulnerability to the infection. Local authorities reported on Friday that the individual was severely ill and receiving hospital treatment. In their latest statement, officials announced they will withhold additional details regarding the patient, such as age, gender, and name, to protect the family’s privacy.
Dave Atteberry, health officer for the Yakima Health District, expressed condolences to the family in a statement, noting that avian influenza leads to severe disease especially in vulnerable populations. He emphasized that despite the tragic outcome, the threat to the general public stays low.
Recent Cases in Washington
Total human infections in Washington have reached three since the virus was first detected in the state’s dairy cattle on October 8, with all cases occurring within Yakima County. Alongside the announcement of the death on Sunday, authorities confirmed the third infection. Similar to the initial case, this new patient had contact with an infected dairy herd within the county, though neither of the surviving individuals developed severe illness or required hospitalization.
