Apple has rolled out tvOS 17.2 to the public, marking the first major update for the Apple TV since tvOS 17 launched in September. While Apple skipped version 17.1 entirely and included no traditional release notes, a support document on Apple’s website details the new additions available now for users.
Screen Savers and FaceTime Improvements
The update brings fresh options to Apple TV screen savers by introducing a new shuffle mode. Instead of being limited to a single category, users can now select a shuffle option that cycles through Aerials, Memories, Portraits, and Snoopy. Additionally, users can select specific photos from their iPhone for the screen saver without granting the Apple TV access to their entire photo library, enhancing privacy in shared households.
As reported by Engadget, FaceTime upgrades allow users to join calls directly from the Apple TV using FaceTime links, while continuing to use an iPhone as a webcam through Continuity Camera. Furthermore, FaceTime now supports third-party sign language interpreters and live captioning services on the platform.
Find My Integration and Accessibility Enhancements
Older Apple TV models receive a minor upgrade regarding the Siri Remote, which now appears directly within the Find My app. This removes the need to use the TV Remote shortcut inside the iPhone Control Center for tracking down misplaced remotes.
Accessibility receives a boost as select movies and shows within the Apple TV app now support American Sign Language (ASL) and British Sign Language (BSL), which can be activated through player controls or settings.
The Apple TV app now synchronizes profiles with iPhones and iPads, complete with new characters on the profile selection screen, alongside a redesigned black-and-white Apple Music icon.
Users can install the free update by navigating to the Settings app, opening System, and selecting Software Update, with compatibility extending to the second-generation Apple TV 4K and later models.
