Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe: A High-Performance EV

The new battery-powered Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe represents a significant shift for the automaker, proving that electric vehicles can maintain the agility and excitement of traditional performance cars. Despite the inherent weight challenges of battery technology, the vehicle demonstrates impressive handling capabilities on both public roads and racing circuits.

Engineering for Performance

A primary hurdle in designing electric sports cars is the significant weight of the battery packs, which can hinder cornering performance. Mercedes-Benz addressed this by utilizing its specialized AMG.EA sports-car architecture. This system manages power delivery across three electric motors while simultaneously coordinating the Active Ride Control suspension, rear-axle steering—which provides up to 6 degrees of movement—and active aerodynamics to ensure the car remains stable and responsive.

Advanced Motor Technology

The vehicle features axial flux motors developed by Yasa, a company acquired by Mercedes in 2021. These motors are notably compact, with the two rear units measuring 3.1 inches (79 mm) in width and the front unit measuring 3.5 inches (89 mm). This design allows for a lighter and smaller powertrain compared to traditional electric setups.

In the AMG GT 63 model, these motors produce a nominal output of 711 hp (530 kW) and 1,475 lb-ft (2,000 Nm) of torque. The vehicle also includes a Boost mode, which provides a peak power output of up to 1,153 hp (860 kW) for a duration of 63 seconds.
